Gene Flow from Transgenic Rice to Conventional Rice in China

Global area of genetically modified crops (GM crops or biotech crops) continues to grow. It was 189.9 million hectares in 2017. Recently, a total of 24 countries have approved GM crops for planting and additional 43 countries have formally imported biotech crops for food, feed, and processing, meaning that biotech crops are now commonly accepted in those countries. With the continuous growth of the global population and the impact of climate change, research and commercialization of genetically modified crops are important for solving global food security issues in the future. At present, a large number of GM rice varieties have been cultivated in China (Chen et al. 2004; Jia 2004). Among them, GM rice varieties with insect resistance (Bt, CpTI genes), disease resistance (Xa21 genes), and herbicide resistance (bar, EPSPs genes) are waiting for relevant planting permits (Chen et al. 2004). In particular, two varieties, “Huahua 1” and “Shanyou 63”, developed by China Huazhong Agriculture Co., Ltd. have obtained GM rice safety certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture of China. However, there is still a lot of controversy in South Korea on the commercialization and safety research of GM products. This article aims to conduct a rational analysis of China's GM rice pollen mobility and China's current GM rice commercialization process to provide relevant reference basis for safety evaluation and future commercialization process of GM rice in South Korea.

A Quick and Simple In-house Screening Protocol for Cold-Tolerance at Seedling Stage in Rice

Cold stress is an emerging threat for rice production in Bangladesh particularly in Boro season (winter rice) at seedling stage. Cold stress during seedbed stage or early establishment stage at the main field induces severe seedling mortality that increases cost cultivation and delays crop establishment and ultimately entails into low yield. Development of sustainable cold tolerant high yielding rice varieties warrants an efficient and economic screening technique of germplasms and breeding population. The protocols for cold screening that so far have been used by the breeders and reported in literature are generally dependent on natural cool temperature and/or expensive climate chamber. In this paper, we report an in-house screening protocol that requires less than three weeks to complete the screening cycle and can be used all year round for mass screening of breeding population.

Identification of Quantitative Trait Loci Associated with Grain Shape Using Cheongchenong/Nagdong Double Haploid Lines in Rice

We performed a molecular marker-based analysis of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the traits that determine appearance quality of the grains using 120 double haploid (DH) lines developed by anther culture from F1 hybrid of a cross between Cheongcheong (Oryza sativa L. ssp. Indica) and Nagdong (Oryza sativa L. ssp. Japonica). The traits studied included grain length, grain width, grain thickness, length to width ration and thousand grain weight. This experiment was conducted with two replications of 2013 and 2014. A linkage map with 217 DNA markers was constructed spanning across 2,067.1 centiMorgans (cM) at an average interval of 9.5 cM between markers and covering 12 rice chromosomes. Interval mapping procedure was used to identify the QTLs controlling five grain traits and QTLs detected were further confirmed using composite interval mapping. A total of 24 QTLs affecting grain appearances were identified and mapped on all the twelve chromosomes for 2 years at grain quality. Nine of the 24 QTLs were reproducibly detected in two year trials. Major QTL for grain length was detected on chromosome 5 in 2013 with a phenotypic variation of 64% and chromosome 7 in 2014 that explained 55% of the phenotypic variation. The QTL findings in this study will in future faciltate the gene isolation and breeding application for improvement of rice grain shape and yield.
